Kumu Hula Legacy

Kumu Hula / President

Joshua Kamuelaonakupanihianamekamahele Chang is a visionary Hawaiian musician, hula dancer, filmmaker, and esteemed Kumu Hula, passionately devoted to preserving and sharing the richness of his culture. Born into a lineage steeped in Polynesian tradition, he was raised in Redondo Beach, CA, where he grew up immersed in the Hawaiian language, arts, and customs—guided by his family's unwavering dedication to their ancestral heritage.

Today, Joshua is a valued member of the Walt Disney Entertainment Team, where he brings the essence of Hawaiʻi to global audiences. Beyond this role, he helms a flourishing music enterprise and film production company in Los Angeles, crafting narratives that celebrate and safeguard his cultural roots.

An acclaimed falsetto artist, Joshua has released two Hawaiian albums, with a third on the horizon. His single, Kiss Me Love, is available on all streaming platforms, enchanting listeners with its soulful melodies. Academically, he distinguished himself with double honors from the Los Angeles Film School, blending artistic excellence with technical mastery. For nearly two decades, he has served as the cultural choreographer for UCLA Hawaiʻi Club’s annual Luau Hōʻike, ensuring the authenticity and vibrancy of its performances.

Yet, at the core of his multifaceted career lies his deepest devotion—his hālau. Since 2009, he has served as Kumu Hula, guiding and nurturing the next generation of dancers with reverence and expertise. His life's work is a testament to his profound commitment to Hawaiian heritage, ensuring that its wisdom, beauty, and spirit endure. Through music, film, and dance, Joshua continues to honor his lineage, inspire future generations, and keep the heartbeat of Hawaiʻi alive.

Uncle Randy Kaulana Chang dedicated over 35 years to teaching and sharing the depth and beauty of Hawaiian culture. In 1996, he formally established his Hālau in Southern California, beginning with humble roots—from a small garage on Kornblum Avenue to the open slopes of Alondra Park, and later to a rented Karate Dojo. After years of growth and dedication, the hālau found a lasting home in Yukon Square Plaza, where it thrived for 21 years. Throughout its journey, the hālau evolved through the contributions of many devoted individuals, each helping to shape its legacy of excellence.

Founded with the mission of preserving and perpetuating Native Hawaiian culture, the hālau serves as a cornerstone for teaching traditional crafts, dance, music, and history—both of Hawaiʻi and the greater Polynesian diaspora. Under Uncle Randy’s leadership, the hālau has showcased its artistry on prestigious stages, competing in renowned events such as Merrie Monarch, E Hula Mau, and Kumukahi. Additionally, it has participated in numerous Kūlia I Ka Punawai(Kumu Hula Association of Southern California) projects, Pacific Islander festivals, and various educational and community engagements.

Born to Frank and Moana Chang, former residents of Carson, California, Uncle Randy was immersed in Hawaiian tradition from an early age. Under the guidance of his mother, Moana, he trained extensively in hula and Polynesian dance, initially focusing on mentoring young kāne (men) within her hula school. In 1999, he expanded his teachings to include wahine (women), sharing his boundless mana‘o (knowledge) with students far and wide. His unwavering dedication has touched countless lives, leaving a profound impact on those who have had the privilege of learning from him.

In 2022, Uncle Randy entrusted the hālau to his son, Joshua Kamuelaonakupanihianamekamahele Chang, ensuring the continuation of his life’s work. On April 23, 2024, Uncle Randy passed on, leaving behind an enduring legacy of cultural excellence and a thriving community dedicated to preserving the Hawaiian spirit.

We invite you to join our hālau and become a part of this remarkable journey—honoring the past, embracing the present, and carrying Hawaiian traditions into the future.

After 25 years of perpetuating the Hawaiian culture. As a past treasurer and president of this organization in its earlier years, I know the sacrifice necessary to keep going forward. • Kananiʻopua Pelayo-Lozada

Ho’imaikaʻi ana e Kaulana Ka Hale Kula ʻO Nā Pua ʻO Ka ʻĀina on twenty-five wonderful years of perpetuating the culture of our kupuna. To be a continent born and raised kānaka can be an isolating one, and one devoid of the values and ways that we come from, so to have a home in this hula halau where we can connect, grow, and learn, has been a privilege. Over the years we have expanded our hālau into a woven group of individuals who love hula, our islands, and each other, and I am forever grateful for being a part of this ʻohana.

Over the next twenty-five years, I look forward to seeing the new faces who will continue the lineage of our halau and our culture and how they connect with that haumāna who have come before. Kūlia i ka nu’u!

Hoʻomaikaʻi on 25 years of hula and aloha and memories to last forever. I am proud and privileged to have been there for part of this incredible journey and hula legacy. Ke aloha nui!
